Jade Kavanagh

Literary Agent

Jade is building a list of suspense, thriller and horror authors. She oversees contracts in house alongside specialising in audiobook publishing.

Whilst undertaking her undergraduate degree in English Literature at the University of Westminster, Jade discovered the possibility of taking her love of books and turning it into a career. Staying on for a year and gaining her MA, she then went on to several publishing internships before finding a placement at Caroline Sheldon Literary Agency before joining the team permanently as Agent’s Assistant and falling in love with the agenting side of the book world.

In April 2020 Jade joined the Darley Anderson team and is building her own list of clients focusing on suspense, thriller and horror authors. Jade works closely with Camilla overseeing contracts and specialises in audiobook publishing.

Her first client’s debut, The Shallows by Holly Craig, published in September 2023 after it’s selection as an Amazon First Reads pick and entering into the US, UK and Australian Kindle Charts.

Jade spends time mentoring through Black Girl Writers working with aspiring authors on their manuscripts all the way through to the submission stages. She loves meeting authors this way and is passionate about nurturing new talent and helping wherever she can to open up what is often felt to be a inaccessible industry by sharing the process of querying and being published. Jade also works with IAmInPrint offering 121 sessions for prospective authors and is involved in specialist panels, presentations, festivals and pitch parties.

Internally, Jade and her DA colleagues started the twice yearly #PitchToDA genre-themed twitter pitch days and co-managed #DAOpenWeek where the agency hosted a week of online events.

  • Book Club

I’m thrilled to be building my list at the Agency. My primary genres and areas of interest include, thriller, glam suspense, psychological suspense, horror, book club and speculative fiction with a darker edge.

Across these genres I look for powerful female narratives and dynamic characterisation. I want female characters like Shiv Roy (Succession), Emily Gilmore (Gilmore Girls), Annalise Keating (How to get away with Murder), Buffy Summers (Buffy), Ellen Ripley (Alien), Dana Scully (The X Files), Detective Kima Greggs (The Wire).

I’d love something with a big book club hook that readers devour in one sitting. Setting and atmosphere are huge for me. I want stories with a vivid sense of place and to be immersed in the world of the characters. I want detail down to what shade of lipstick or colour of the lamp on their bedside table and the nature and landscape around them. I love luxury settings I can get excited about reading and descriptions I can lose myself in. I also love dark twists on glamorous concepts and settings. Think, The Devil Wears Prada meets Killing Eve, or Real Housewives or Succession meets How to Kill My Family or something akin to White Lotus.

Across the spectrum of horror and speculative fiction, I’m looking for haunting stories filled with slow build darkness and characters with heart. Think 28 Days Later and The Last of Us. I really want a dark witchy story… or on the cozier side I’d love to read a fresh take on something like Practical Magic or Charmed. I want heroes to root for, and villains that terrify and enrage me in equal measure.

One of my favourite TV shows is Orphan Black, I’d love to see a book series like this. Taking the genetic modification and cloning premise to a new place with a kick-ass female ensemble like Sarah and her sisters in a thriller. As a proud member of the Twilight generation, (Team Edward forever) I’d also love to read a modern vampire novel. Show me American Psycho meets Dracula. Give me 2023 Carlisle Cullen in a thriller or a new take on Buffy.

Whilst I’m not actively looking for a sci-fi novels, I would love to see A Scully and Mulder for the 2020s!

Notably, I look for voices from all walks of life. I am incredibly passionate about bringing working-class voices into the commercial fiction space. I’d love to hear from new exciting talent, telling stories about everyday people with relatable voices, people I grew up with, people I can imagine.

I’d love to see something like the below in my inbox…

THE DRY, Jane Harper
THE MOTHERS, Brit Benett
LUCKY, Marissa Stapley
THE CLUB, Ellery Lloyd
HEX, Thomas Olde Heuvelt
QUEENIE, Candice Carty-Williams
