Clare Wallace

Managing Director of Children's & Agent

Clare joined the Darley Anderson Agency in January 2011. Clare is building both the Darley Anderson Children’s Agency and the Darley Anderson Illustration Agency lists and also represents a boutique list of commercial adult fiction in both the UK and US.

Her author’s include Sophie Cousens, Kerry Fisher, Martyn Ford, Phaedra Patrick, Beth Reekles, Dave Rudden, Deirdre Sullivan and Samantha Tonge. For a list of Clare’s children’s clients please go to the Darley Anderson Children’s Book website.

Clare’s clients have featured on the New York Times bestseller list, been USA Today bestsellers, eBook bestsellers and selected for the Good Morning America Book Club, with many titles adapted for or in development for the screen.

Clare’s very busy with the children’s and illustration agencies but is open to adult fiction submissions that could be described as book club, rom-com, romance, saga, reading group, fantasy or historical fiction. Clare’s taste is very voice led, she always wants to hear from under-represented writers, and is ultimately looking for an exceptional reading experience that will make her feel! Also, if you are writing both commercial adult and children’s fiction then she might be a good fit for you. She loves working editorially with her authors and represents several clients who are successfully developing their careers in both adult and children’s fiction.

Before joining Darley Anderson, Clare assisted at a specialist non-fiction agency. Graduating with a first from a BA in Creative Writing and Cultural Studies at Bath Spa University, Clare went on to gain a distinction on the MA in Creative Writing. She has proof-listened to hundreds of adults and children’s audio books and worked for Cardiff University as a research assistant and coach to international students.

If you would like to submit your children’s book to Clare, please follow the submission guidelines on the Darley Anderson Children’s Book Agency website.

My Wishlist

I want to discover unforgettable characters, I love a strong hook, or a high concept, and books that are ambitious in scope, but most of all I’m a reader first. Like a browsing bookshop customer, ultimately, I’m looking for an amazing reading experience.

What do you want to say with your work, why is this the book that only you can write? What is the hook? Can you make me see or experience the world differently? Are the stakes high enough? These are some of the questions I’m asking when I’m reading submissions. I want to discover unforgettable characters, I love a strong hook, or a high concept, and books that are ambitious in scope, but most of all I’m a reader first. Like a browsing bookshop customer, ultimately, I’m looking for an amazing reading experience.

In adult fiction, I read widely but am always seduced by a strong voice and am particularly looking for under-represented voices. I love contemporary women’s fiction and book club reads. I’m interested in exploring those areas of women’s lives which aren’t so much talked about but should be – perimenopause, menopause, mental health, second chances, second marriages, care-giving, blended families, evolving or twisted friendships, the relentless juggle that many of us manage.  Give me messy lives and topical dilemmas.

Similarly, this same interest spills over into rom-com and romance. Give me big, hooky, commercial, page-turning loves stories, but ideally make me laugh and cry! Sophie Cousens does this to great effect, bringing brilliant concepts and real depth to her work, while also being effortlessly hilarious.

Within historical fiction, I love to discover a new perspective, a new voice, and will always gravitate towards fiction ‘inspired by true events,’ or a feminist take on an old tale. I like the beautiful and the brutal, the sweeping and the atmospheric.

I also love accessible, unique, fantasy. I want to be immersed in new worlds, with high stakes, and characters that will stay with me.

And finally, I am always looking for graphic novels in the adult space and as MD of the Darley Anderson illustration agency, we are well placed in this area of the market.

A Terrible Kindness by Jo Browning Wroe
